Choosing a manual grinder

How to choose a manual coffee grinder — decide on espresso first

Decide what you brew first. For pour-over or French press a standard model is enough; for espresso you need a model with very fine, closely spaced adjustment (often labeled ESP or espresso). Then look at burr material, capacity per grind, and weight.

Manual grinders span a wide price range; fit for your brew method comes first.

1. Grind range for your method

  • Pour-over, moka pot, French press — medium to coarse; standard models are fine

  • Espresso — very fine grind with small adjustment steps; look for ESP or espresso labels

2. Burr material

  • Stainless steel — common in manual grinders

  • Ceramic — rust-proof but can crack if dropped

Burr geometry and machining matter as much as material.

3. Adjustment

  • Click (stepped) — easy to return to the same setting

  • Stepless — finer control, harder to repeat exactly

4. Capacity and weight

  • 20–25g covers 1–2 cups

  • For travel or camping, check weight and size first

FAQ

Q. I only do pour-over. Do I need an espresso grinder?

No. Espresso models shine in fine-end adjustment; a standard model is enough for pour-over.

Q. Can a manual grinder do espresso?

Yes, if it's made for espresso, though fine grinding takes more effort and time by hand.
