MagSafe vs Qi2 vs Qi2.2

MagSafe vs Qi2 vs Qi2.2 — can your iPhone charge at 25W?

MagSafe is Apple's magnetic wireless charging system; Qi2 (up to 15W) and Qi2.2 (up to 25W) are open magnetic standards that Android phones can use too. Per Apple, 25W wireless charging is supported on iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, 16 Plus, 16 Pro Max, 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max with a 30W or higher adapter. iPhone 15 and earlier and iPhone 17e top out at 15W, iPhone 16 and 16 Pro peak at 22.5W, and iPhone Air peaks at 20W.

Charger names mix MagSafe, Qi2, Qi2.2, 25W and 15W. The key point: you only get the speed both the charger and the phone support.

The three in one line each

  • MagSafe — Apple's own system, iPhone only

  • Qi2 — the WPC wireless charging standard with magnetic alignment, up to 15W, iPhone and Android

  • Qi2.2 — the next version of Qi2, up to 25W, also open

All three use magnets to align. The differences are maximum speed and exclusivity.

Max wireless charging by iPhone (Apple official)

  • Up to 25W — iPhone 18 Pro/18 Pro Max, 17 Pro/17 Pro Max, 17, 16 Plus, 16 Pro Max

Requires a 30W or higher (15V/2.0A or higher) power adapter.

  • 22.5W peak — iPhone 16, 16 Pro

  • 20W peak — iPhone Air

  • Up to 15W — iPhone 17e, iPhone 15 and earlier

    Requires a 20W or higher USB-C adapter.

These figures are for Apple's MagSafe Charger. To get 25W from a third-party Qi2.2 charger, the phone must support Qi2.2, and a recent iOS may be required.

Before you buy

  1. How many watts your iPhone accepts (above)
  2. Whether the charger is Qi2 or Qi2.2, and certified
  3. Adapter wattage — 25W needs 30W or more
  4. Case — thick non-magnetic cases may not attach or may interrupt charging; use a MagSafe-compatible case
  5. Heat — wireless charging throttles as temperature rises, which is why some chargers have fans
