Choosing ANC earbuds

How to choose noise-cancelling earbuds — what matters more than the dB number

Check (1) whether the earbuds seal the ear (open-ear designs block little by design), (2) codec support that suits your phone (AAC for iPhone), and (3) fit, battery life with ANC on, and app support. Figures like '-43dB' are measured differently by each maker, so they aren't directly comparable across brands.

Listings splash numbers like "-43dB noise cancelling", but measurement methods vary by maker, so they don't compare well across brands.

1. Fit decides isolation

  • In-ear (silicone tips) — sealing the ear makes ANC effective; tip size must fit.

  • Open-ear / ear-hook — you hear surroundings; comfortable for sport and long wear, not for blocking noise.

2. Codec for your phone

  • iPhone — check AAC support.

  • Android — LDAC and other high-quality codecs need support on both phone and earbuds.

Without a shared codec it falls back to SBC.

3. Also check

  • App control for ANC strength and EQ

  • Bluetooth version (helps only if your phone supports it too)

  • Battery life with ANC on

FAQ

Q. Is a -46dB model quieter than a -43dB one?

Not necessarily; measurement conditions differ. Use such numbers only to compare models within one brand.

Q. Do I need LDAC for an iPhone?

iPhones don't use LDAC. AAC support matters more.
